Top 5 Supplements for High Blood Pressure

Check out these 5 tips for blood pressure reduction supplements. At the end, you will see where to get them and what the appropriate dosing.

  1. Beetroot powder

Beets are loaded with nitrates (NO3). These are converted to NO2 and then to NO, nitric oxide. NO is a signal to blood vessel cells to RELAX. As they relax, blood vessel open and blood pressure normalizes. The steps in the process are not that easy and require co-factors like oral bacteria (probiotics), stomach acid (digestive enzymes), B vitamins, and magnesium. Plenty of toxins in our food and environment can interfere with the production of NO. None-the-less, beetroot powder is the first supplement I reach for in my hypertensive patients.

  2. Magnesium

Magnesium is natures calcium channel blocker, thus allowing blood vessels to relax instead of contracted. Magnesium tells the smooth muscle cells to chill out and thus, drop blood pressure. Low magnesium is linked to high blood pressure in just about every study, and magnesium supplements have plenty of data to prove they work. I prefer a combination of magnesium formulations to get the job done (see below).

  3. Potassium

Potassium goes hand in hand with magnesium to support healthy blood pressure. The higher your blood potassium, the more normal your blood pressure. So many drugs lead to low potassium in the blood AND in the cells where the action is. Trust me, I test intracellular potassium on my patients and just about all of them come back low. I love potassium rich foods like avocado and yams, but sometimes we need to add in the potassium supplement. Capsules don’t contain enough potassium, so we need to reach for our powder.

  4. Amino acids

Following the theme of NO and the importance of beetroot powder, amino acids like arginine, citrulline, and taurine are critical for NO production and recycling. These amino acids are found in protein rich foods, but as a supplement combo, they cannot be matched.

  5. Co Q 10

The fuel factory of the cell is the mitochondria. And what makes the mitochondria hum? Co Q 10. Clinical trials show Co Q 10 supplementation lowers blood pressure. The best food source of Co Q 10 is animal heart. Ha ha, I can see your cringe across the internet. That is why we put animal heart in our Kick Start My Heart. But Co Q 10 also comes in a direct supplement form that is great for just about everyone, but certainly people with high blood pressure.
