Is Your Greens Juice Killing You?
Greens juicing is sweeping the nation. People are losing tons of weight with juice fasts. This was well documented in the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Basically, a man loses over 100 pounds on a juice only cleanse. He gets off his medications and feels years younger.
Personally, I advise many people to do the same. It is a great detox and way to “reset” the system. I have patients that have juice-fasted their way to 50 and 75 pound weight loss.
Juice bars and restaurants seem to be popping up on every corner. Whole Foods has been offering a wide variety of choices at their juice bars.
It must be organic!
But there is something consumers are doing that I cannot understand. They are buying non-organic juices. Stores sell these juices because they are cheaper than organic. Unfortunately, the people who purchase these non-organic drinks either don’t ask the appropriate questions or don’t care. They are foolish.
Essentially what is happening is a concentration of all the pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers of a few pounds of produce into a 16 oz. cup. This is a very bad idea and very dangerous to your health.
We know these chemicals are associated with inflammation and oxidative damage. Some also cause cancer. Let’s face it, if pesticides kill pests, won’t they kill us? It blows my mind that people drink this stuff.
Please, only drink organic juice. Select cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, cabbage, dandelion, romaine, garlic, ginger, chard, beets, and maybe even a little carrot. Fresh sprouts are also an excellent addition. Juice ginger and turmeric. Add some lemon to make it a little more palatable if you like.
I recommend staying away from the fruit such as apple, pineapple, citrus, berries, and the like because they are just too high in sugar.
The pre-packaged juice in most stores is not only pesticide filled, but also housed in a plastic bottle for a double hormone whammy. Try to stick with glass only.
