Can CBD Oil Help Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an abnormal heart rhythm that affects the lives of millions of Americans. Some people have symptoms with AF and some don’t. Either way, AF can lead to heart failure and strokes, dramatically impacting the lives of those with this condition.

The medical community is very good at dispensing pharmaceuticals and surgical procedures for AF. Unfortunately for those afflicted with AF, neither drugs or surgeries address the cause and leave the patient at risk for serious illness and even death.

Inflammation is one of those causes.

AFIB stems from abnormal function of atrial tissue in the heart. The atria are inflamed and irritated. The immune system is in overdrive because of poor nutrition and a toxic, polluted planet.

I have addressed nutrition and lifestyle in my book, The Paleo Cardiologist (for FREE here)  and in many blogs. For now, I want to dive into the use of cannabidiol (CBD) to shut down inflammation and fix your AFIB.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main pharmacologically active phytocannabinoids of Cannabis sativa L. CBD is non-psychoactive (as opposed to THC also from Cannabis) but exerts a number of beneficial pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. CBD is a compound containing twenty-one carbon atoms, with the formula C21H30O2. That’s it. Just carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

The chemistry and pharmacology of CBD, as well as various molecular targets, including cannabinoid receptors and other components of the endocannabinoid system with which it interacts, have been extensively studied.

If CBD can lower inflammation, can it help reverse atrial fibrillation?

I think so. Vitamin C and vitamin E have proven useful for atrial fibrillation, likely because they are antioxidants. AFIB is linked to lower levels of glutathione, the body’s main antioxidant. Boosting glutathione is key (see our Daily Defense shake mix) for inflammation control and CBD can add to this protocol.

Oxidized lipids are a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. These damaged lipids such as DHA and EPA undoubtedly affect heart rhythm. CBD can help according to this study.

CBD can help chelate toxic metals, a function that should also benefit the person with AFIB.

CBD improves other AFIB risk factors

Aside from inflammation, CBD can help improve other risk factors for AFIB including:

  1. High blood pressure. CBD can help, as evidenced in this study
  2. Diabetes according to this study.
  3. Sleep disorders per this study.

Leaky gut is a topic I discuss often. Leaky gut leads to leaky heart. And leaky heart leads to AFIB.

I think stimulating the endocannabinoid system can help resolve leaky gut, leaky heart and maybe even AFIB per this study.

CBD, the autonomic nervous system, and AFIB

An imbalance of the autonomic nervous system is undoubtedly a major factor in causation of AFIB and the resultant tachycardia (rapid heart rate) of AFIB. This part of the brain system has two parts: the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The former is the “fight or flight” branch. The latter is “rest and digest.”

By improving the balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic, we can expect the best heart function. CBD is proven to inhibit the sympathetic system, thus lowering heart rate and controlling AFIB.

Can CBD help with stroke prevention?

Stroke is a major concern of both physician and patient alike. And for good reason. No one wants to have a stroke. Yet AFIB is a major cause of stroke. This 6 page review discusses the therapeutic potential for CBD and stroke prevention.

Best CBD available

It seems like everyone is selling CBD these days. How do you know what product and company are best?

The Drs. Wolfson trusts Biotics Research. Two brothers started this company over 40 years ago. I have been to the factory. I know the brothers. I know the team. I know that they test for efficacy and impurities. I know that Biotics makes the best of the best.

Our patients have had tons of success with Biotics. So will you.

The suggested dose for all indications is 1 dropperful. Give that dose a try. If you need more, double it up. If you can get away with less, give it a try.
