Do you struggle to find healthy salad dressings and dips? Look no further than this EASY and HEALTHY salad dressing, which can double as a dip. This recipe is a powerhouse for immunity.

This dressing combines healthy fat and protein that will add flavor and a nutritional and immune boost to any meal. The superstars in this recipe are anchovy, egg yolks and garlic.

The anchovies add omega-3 fats, protein, and plenty of calcium from the tiny bones that you cannot taste once blended. Someone in the family not keen on fish? This is a sneaky way to add it into a daily diet.

Egg yolks provide additional vitamin A which we know is a powerhouse that supports immune function. Vitamin A isn’t found in many foods, but a deficiency in it can make you more susceptible to respiratory infections and other diseases, this is a great way to incorporate it.

Garlic, we know it keeps the vampires away (thank goodness for that), but did you know it also helps the body resist and destroy viruses?

Definitely ditch the store bought salad dressing – it gives “salad dressing” a bad name. They are laden with preservatives, inflammatory oils, like soybean or canola, and other unnecessary ingredients. Not to mention they are packaged in plastic which leaches chemicals into your food. Humans already have high levels of plastic in their blood, which is linked to heart disease, cancer, and hormone problems. It isn’t surprising people are so sick!

Look no further for a heart healthy, immune boosting game changer:

The Drs. Wolfson Super Immunity Salad Dressing

Feel free to adjust the amounts of the different ingredients in this salad dressing according to your taste. If you want it tangier add more apple cider vinegar. If you love the flavor of great olive oil loaded with polyphenols (great for immune health) then increase the amount of olive oil. You really can’t go wrong with this recipe, no matter what you do!

Olive oil (or another organic oil of your choice)

One tsp MCT oil (optional)

Apple Cider Vinegar or lemon juice

Anchovies (start slowly if you choose)

Capers (tremendous anti-inflammatory source of quercetin)

Fresh garlic (the amount depends on how many vampires you want to keep away)

One pasture-raised egg yolk

Spices (black cumin, cumin, turmeric, ginger, rosemary, oregano, thyme etc. ) Read more here about 10 Spices for Heart Health.

To make the recipe “creamy”, add an AVO-CARDIO – ½ to 1 whole

Do NOT add salt. There is plenty of salt in the anchovy.

Add the above to a blender and blend until smooth. We prefer a Vitamix, this is a great investment that will last for years. Store the remainder in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Lasts up to 7 days but it is so tasty it won’t last nearly that long.

In this busy life it’s nice to know that you really can’t mess this recipe up. Too thick? Add more olive oil, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. For an extra probiotic kick add a little liquid from kimchi or sauerkraut. These probiotic punches are a great staple in any kitchen.

In fact, add whatever you would like to this recipe, it is a great way to get the foods you need into your body. Sometimes, we add sunflower or pumpkin seeds, sometimes sliced onion and garlic. Make it fun and make it different every time. Experimenting with healthy additions is always a good idea!

Your body will thank you for it and your family and friends will live healthier and longer lives too!

Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib, is the most common type of heart arrhythmia that can interrupt the normal flow of blood. In AFib, signals in your upper chambers become chaotic and can quiver. The blood can then stagnate and pool in the upper chamber putting one at risk for other cardiac complications like stroke.

The first objective is to lower the risk of AFib episodes by treating the root causes of the condition. This is done by lowering inflammation, keeping blood pressure under control, reducing oxidative stress, removing toxins (mold, envirotoxins and heavy metals), increasing antioxidant status, increasing energy and strength in heart cells, restoring nutrient levels in cells, and increasing nitric oxide.

This is where all of the essential minerals and vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants come into play. The goal of these key AFib foods is to provide the necessary nutrients for the heart to beat in rhythm and function better. Luckily, these foods are all a part of a healthy Paleo diet.

Top 10 foods for AFib:

Dark green leafy vegetables

Dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, arugula or spinach are rich in dietary nitrates. These nitrates get converted to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is a molecule needed to relax blood vessels, increase blood flow and restore endothelial functioning. It also has powerful anti-arrhythmic effects.

Main AFib role: NITRIC OXIDE PRODUCTION

Try a Paleo recipe: Paleo Triple Green Kale Salad

Wild-caught salmon

Fatty fish, such as salmon, is the single best source of essential omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 stabilizes heart cells, prevents heart arrhythmias, reduces cellular inflammation and lowers risk of AFib overall.

Main AFib role: ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

Try a Paleo recipe: Sweet and Spicy Glazed Salmon

Avocado

Avocados are arguably one of the most important foods for heart health, especially for AFib. Avocados are rich in key “heart rhythm” minerals such as potassium and magnesium. One avocado per day provides adequate amounts of these two minerals that are needed to regulate heart rhythm and support proper relaxation and contraction of heart muscle cells.

Main AFib role: RHYTHM REGULATION

Try a Paleo recipe: Crunchy Cucumber and Avocado Salad

Grass-fed beef

Grass-fed red meat is rich in heart-healthy nutrients including carnitine, CoQ10, D-ribose and taurine. All of these nutrients are cellular energy nutrients that increase ATP production in heart muscle cells. When energy is increased in heart cells then cardiac functioning improves. Taurine also helps to regulate mineral balance in cells and stabilize heart cell membranes. Together, all of these nutrients help to reduce AFib risk.

Main AFib role: CELLULAR ENERGY

Try a Paleo recipe: Paleo Grass Fed Burgers

Dark berries

Dark berries, like raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries, are rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants. Dietary antioxidants help to reduce toxin load, lower oxidative stress, decrease cellular inflammation and boost heart muscle cell functioning. They are crucial nutrients to preventing and healing cardiovascular conditions.

Main AFib role: ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT

Try a Paleo recipe: Avocado-Berry Smoothie

Pasture-raised eggs

Eggs are abundant in healthy fats and choline. Healthy fats stabilize heart cell membranes. Choline helps to keep the blood vessels strong and healthy. Decreased choline levels have been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and increased AFib risk. Pasture-raised eggs also contain CoQ10, vitamins B6/B12, and D-ribose, all of which help to increase heart muscle cell function.

Main AFib role: HEART CELL FUNCTION

Try a Paleo recipe: Breakfast Egg Muffins

Beets

Beets are the best source of dietary nitrates, which get converted to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and keeps the heart healthy. Nitric oxide has anti-arrhythmic effects and could play a role in reducing the severity of ventricular arrhythmias. Beets also have ideal levels of magnesium in them, a key mineral for regulation of heart rhythm.

Main AFib role: NITRIC OXIDE PRODUCTION

Try a Paleo recipe: Rosemary Beets with Garlicky Kale

Grass-fed organ meat

Organ meat, such as beef heart, is a carnivore superfood for the heart. Beef heart contains key minerals, L-carnitine, vitamin B6 and CoQ10 to protect, strengthen, and stabilize heart muscle cells. Organ meats support the body’s organs in an organ-specific fashion (i.e. heart helps the heart). Organ meat is actually one of the best sources of CoQ10 (an antioxidant for the heart) that increases energy uptake in heart cells and helps them to become stronger.

Main AFib role: STRENGTHENING THE HEART

Try a Paleo recipe: Bacon, Apple and Chicken Liver Skillet

Bone broth

Bone broth is rich in heart-strengthening nutrients such as collagen along with amino acids like glutamine and glycine. These protein components are very healing and strengthening to the heart muscle cells. They play a role in stabilizing heart cell membranes and increasing cellular function. Bone broth also provides ideal amounts of magnesium and potassium to optimize heart rhythm.

Main AFib role: STRENGTHENING THE HEART

Try a Paleo recipe: Beef Bone Broth

Watercress

Watercress is a leafy, cruciferous vegetable from the same family as broccoli. It is rich in sulfur and quercetin, making it highly detoxifying to heart cells. As a result, it helps to lower oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and help the heart cells function better. It is also abundant in B vitamins, potassium and antioxidants to improve cardiac functioning

Main AFib role: DETOXIFICATION

Try a Paleo recipe: Creamy Watercress Soup

Healthy desserts are also great tasting desserts. We are going to share with you 12 of our staff’s favorite dessert recipes for the holidays.

Traditional holiday baking recipes are loaded with artificial ingredients, refined sugar, processed flours and GMO oils.

The recipes I’m going to share are all gluten-free. Some are grain-free. Most are compliant with all diets, including vegan and Paleo.

The key to healthy holiday baking is to source healthy alternative ingredients. You’ll see that reflected in these recipes.

Be sure to use organic, non-GMO ingredients. If you’re using a sugar, try substituting with a natural option like raw honey whenever possible.

Here are 12 of my favorite gluten-free healthy holiday treats:

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month so we wanted to share with you our top tips to keeping your brain healthy and functioning at all ages! These wellness tips are aimed at boosting nutrient intake, getting rid of toxins and engaging in healthy lifestyle behaviors every day. These foods and tips will also work to optimize your overall health.

There is a current rise in the Alzheimer’s disease epidemic. Research projects that by the year 2050 one new case of the disease will develop every 33 seconds and an estimated 1 million individuals will develop it annually in the U.S.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that slowly destroys brain cells called neurons. AD can affect different regions of the brain and the most devastating effects are seen on memory, language and thinking skills.

In AD, there are abnormal deposits of toxic proteins called amyloid that form sticky plaques and there are other strands of proteins called tau that twist together. Together, amyloid and tau cause damage and cell death to brain cells. Many of the aspects of AD disease process are still unclear to researchers. What they do know is that the result of this neuronal damage is significant memory loss, cognitive decline, and ultimately a loss of activities of daily living.

In order for one to be clinically diagnosed with AD, one has to have evidence of memory loss and a deficit of one other cognitive characteristic such as the ability to focus one’s attention on a specific task and complete it.

There are currently no effective treatments or cures for AD only drugs that treat symptoms.

What are the causes of Alzheimer’s disease?

There are two types of AD: early-onset and late-onset. Early-onset affects individuals before the age of 65 and is usually the result of specific genetic risk factors that cause mutations in one of three genes called APP, PSEN1 and PSEN2. Late-onset AD typically affects individuals older than 65, and constitutes the great majority of cases. Late-onset isn’t likely due to genetics. In fact, even if an individual’s parents both had late-onset AD, they wouldn’t necessarily get it. Often it is the result of environmental, lifestyle and epigenetic factors (much the same as any other chronic disease).

Alzheimer’s disease is a complex disease with a multitude of potential risk factors, many of which are similar to other chronic diseases like heart disease. Risk factors include:

Inflammation of the brain, called neuroinflammation

An accumulation of harmful free radicals in cells, called oxidative damage

Leaky gut syndrome

Bacteria that causes gum disease (which is often the result of leaky gut)

Viral infections

Aging

Family history of AD

Expression of certain genes

What is the best way to eat for brain health?

A combination of intermittent fasting and an organic, Paleo diet is the best way to keep your brain healthy. It is the same diet plan we would recommend for our heart disease patients and for other prevention of other chronic diseases.

Intermittent fasting has been shown to be beneficial to neurological health. Try the 16/8 method. Fast for a sixteen-hour window (try after dinner until the next day) and eat only between the 8-hour window. Research has found that fasting can improve neural connections in the brain, prevent the formation of toxic amyloid plaques and improve memory and cognition (Source).

If you’re a morning coffee drinker, we recommend Cardiology Coffee. This coffee has the highest antioxidant capacity there is, which greatly benefits the brain. You can drink 1-2 cups, and studies say more, of Cardiology Coffee in the morning.

The Paleo diet has tremendous evidence for improving Alzheimer’s disease risk factors such as inflammation, hypertension, cholesterol, triglycerides and the list goes on and on. Alzheimer’s disease has become a metabolic disorder and the Paleo diet is great for improving aspects of metabolic health.

The Paleo diet is the ideal diet for preventing AD for a number of reasons. It eliminates simple carbohydrates, gluten and processed foods from the diet and replaces them with vegetables, fruits and healthy proteins and fats.

Additionally, the grass-fed meat, poultry and wild-caught fish found on a Paleo diet are rich in a nutrient called CoQ10. CoQ10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant that can increase cellular function and reduce amyloid plaque formation.

Key nutrients for brain health:

Anti-inflammatory nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids and turmeric

CoQ10 antioxidant

N-acetyl cysteine (to increase glutathione antioxidant)

Brain-Boosting Shake recipe YOU are guaranteed to LOVE:

2 scoops vanilla Daily Defense

1 teaspoon Daily Greens

½ of an avocado

1 tablespoon MCT oil

½ c. organic frozen blueberries

Mix all the ingredients in a blender and enjoy your brain-boosting drink!

What are healthy lifestyle behaviors for a healthy brain:

Get adequate sunshine and vitamin D

See a chiropractor regularly

Manage your stress

Engage in mental or educational activities often (helps your brain cells communicate better)

Eat a healthy organic diet free of pesticides and chemicals

Use natural products in your house. Here’s a list of what we use.

Have good oral hygiene

Improve your gut health

Move your body for at least 30 minutes each day

Drink good quality water everyday

Maintain a healthy cardiovascular system

Key supplements and nutrients to support brain health and prevent neurodegenerative disease:

Omega DHA: 2 caps per day, or as directed by your doctor

It is a known fact that people with high intakes of omega 3 fatty acids from fish have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease

Omega 3 fats are essential for reducing cellular inflammation and are key components of brain cell membranes

Curcu Gold: 1 cap 3 times per day, or as directed by your doctor

Curcu Gold contains turmeric, which is a highly anti-inflammatory compound than can help lower oxidative stress

Research has shown that it could help also in reducing toxic amyloid-beta plaque formation in the brain (Source)

GlutaBoost: 1 cap 2 times per day, or as directed by your doctor

GlutaBoost contains N-acetyl cysteine, which is the precursor to glutathione (the body’s master cellular antioxidant)

Protects cells from oxidation by increasing cell’s antioxidant fighting power

Berbe: 2 caps 2 times per day, or as directed by your doctor

Berberine is a plant compound that has been shown to manage insulin resistance and protect brain cells

It also inhibits atherosclerosis and lowers blood glucose, both of which are risk factors for AD

Research has also shown it can help prevent accumulation of harmful amyloid and tau proteins in the brain (Source)

Did you know the foods you eat can boost your nitric oxide levels?

Nitric oxide is created by the cells in the human body. It is one of the most important molecules for blood vessel health and heart health.

It works as a vasodilator, meaning it dilates and relaxes blood vessels. As a result, blood flow increases and blood pressure decreases making it cardioprotective.

There are many key compounds that the body can use to make nitric oxide. These compounds include the amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline. Additionally, there are key compounds needed to preserve the breakdown of nitric oxide in the body such as vitamin C and coenzyme Q10.

Here are 10 Paleo recipes featuring meat, vegetables, nuts and fruit. Enjoy!

1. Roasted Beets and Carrots with Rosemary Garlic Butter By: Paleo OMG

Beets are one of the best sources of dietary nitrates and get converted to nitric oxide in the body. Beets are associated with improved heart function, increased blood flow and reduced blood pressure levels. Beets are one of the best foods to eat for your heart beat.

2. Sautéed Greens with Toasted Spices By: Mikaela Rueben

Leafy greens such as arugula, swiss chard or kale are a rich source of dietary nitrates. These dietary nitrates get converted into nitric oxide in the body. Eating foods rich in nitrates regularly can help to optimize nitric oxide levels in the body.

3. Roasted Garlic Dressing By: Happy Kitchen Rocks

Garlic activates a key enzyme, nitric oxide synthase, which boosts the conversion of arginine to nitric oxide in the body. Garlic can also increase the bioavailability of nitric oxide for the body.

4. Liver Bacon Meatballs By: The Nourished Caveman

Grass-fed meat, especially organ meat, is rich in the nutrient coenzymeQ10. Liver is one of the highest sources of CoQ10. CoQ10 is a key molecule needed to preserve nitric oxide in the body.

5. Kohlrabi Slaw with Cilantro, Jalapeno and Lime By: Feasting at Homme

Both kohlrabi and citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C increases nitric oxide concentrations due to its ability to increase its availability and absorption in the body.

6. Maple Balsamic-Glazed Scallops with Pomegranate By: Cotter Crunch

Pomegranates are loaded with antioxidants that can prevent the unwanted breakdown of nitric oxide in the body. These polyphenols aid in converting dietary nitrite into nitric oxide. The compounds in pomegranates have also been found to increase levels of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. Additionally, the antioxidants in pomegranate lower inflammation and reduce oxidative stress, which protects the heart.

7. Maca Chocolate Smoothie By: Mikaela Rueben

The raw cacao bean (where you get dark chocolate from) is loaded with antioxidants that can increase nitric oxide and conserve it in the body. It can also lower blood pressure and eliminate markers of inflammation.

8. Thai Watermelon Salad By: Every Last Bite

Watermelon contains a high amount of the amino acid, L-citrulline, which gets converted to L-arginine in the body and ultimately to nitric oxide. The L-citrulline in the body is easily absorbed and helps to produce quality nitric oxide.

9. Walnut Banana Bread By: Food Republic

Nuts, especially walnuts, are especially high in the amino acid L-arginine. Other nuts are also good sources of arginine. Again, this gets converted to nitric oxide in the body, which aids in vasodilation and relaxation of blood vessels.

10. Vanilla Pumpkin Seed Clusters By: Wallflower Kitchen

Pumpkin seeds have one of the highest concentrations of the amino acid arginine. L-arginine is an amino acid involved in the production of nitric oxide. Eating foods rich in arginine can help to increase nitric oxide levels in your body.
