Watch Time – 2 minutes

I was recently interviewed on a podcast about the state of healthcare in the US today. Watch as I explain what I call the Sickness Model vs. Wellness Model of Healthcare.

TRANSCRIPT:

Interviewer asks question.

Dr. Jack’s answer –

Sure. So, when I talk about the sickness model, is that it’s the typical pill and procedure approach that the average medical doctor provides. So, the medical doctor is not giving us any lifestyle tips. They’re not talking about nutrition. Maybe they’ll say a couple of words at most. Or follow this plan or follow the guidelines.

They’re not talking about the importance of sleep, and the importance of sunshine, and the importance of getting stress out of your life and keeping chemicals and toxins out of your life.

They only talk about an antibiotic. A prescription drug. Some new surgery. Some procedure. Some test you need to have done. They’ve got nothing for prevention.

That’s the sickness model.

I want to get people over to the health model where we talk about nutrition, we talk about lifestyle, we talk about the importance of sleep and sunshine and removing stress and staying physically active. We talk about these things.

We talk about the chiropractic adjustment. We talk about how people need to see Doctors of Chiropractic for all things health and wellness.

And, that’s where the revolution is on. You know, your generation doesn’t want to take pills from my generation. You want to know why. You want to know why you want to do something.

You are not the generation that just walks into the office and the doctor says, “Here’s your drugs.” Because you guys are saying, “Wait a second. Is there anything better than this? Or, I heard bad things about that. Or, I’m educated. I’m a smart young woman and I want to know the truth. I don’t want to be sick. I don’t want to take your drugs. I don’t want to do these procedures. I want better answers.”

And I think that’s really where the health revolution…

Watch Time: 3 minutes 13 seconds

In this video, I share my five favorite foods that support healthy thyroid function.

TRANSCRIPT:

The thyroid and the heart and intimately intertwined and I should know. I’m a board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Jack Wolfson, and I want to tell you about certain foods that are critical for healthy thyroid function.

First and foremost, number one, get lots of iodine. And you can get the iodine from eating sea vegetables. So, wakame, nori, dulce, kelp, those are all excellent sources of iodine so get those in to your body today.

Shellfish is another great source of iodine, including certainly shrimp would be one of those options.

And taking me to shrimp would also be number two in eating those shellfish and stuff like that where you get a tremendous source of selenium. And selenium is essential for thyroid function, the formation of thyroid hormone. Another great source of selenium is Brazil Nuts. So, eat the Brazil Nuts, make the Brazil Nut milk, and go ahead and eat those oysters and clams and shrimp.

Also, number three, you want to make sure you are getting quality tyrosine foods. Tyrosine is an amino acid that helps to build up the thyroid and tyrosine you get from eating animal products. You get it from eating organs such a liver, and kidney, and heart and of course the thyroid gland itself. So, that may be another recommendation is actually that eating thyroid gland from a quality, free-range, grass fed animal like our ancestors did for millions of years they ate the organ meats, not the muscle meats and ground beef and filet. We were eating the organs and animals in the wild still eat the organs in preference to the other parts of the animal.

The other thing next would be an avocado. Avocado is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium. All these things help thyroid function. You need a lot of magnesium and potassium to help drive the formation of thyroxin is T4, the conversion into T3, the utilization of T3 on the periphery so thyroid hormone can be used.

And that takes me to my next point where I would say that fish would be number five on this list if I’m going in order here. I’m just kind of on a rant.

But fish would be another great source of Omega 3. So, eating sardines, anchovies, wild salmon. Loading up on those foods that are so high in Omega 3 and Omegas 3s are critical for the function of the cell membrane, and the formation of the cell membrane so if you have a healthy cell membrane in that thyroid, that thyroid can receive information coming in appropriately, and then send out information to the body when you have good amounts of Omega 3 DHA that you get from eating seafood.

So, those are my recommendations regarding foods that are so important for thyroid and heart health.

Are you struggling with what to do for breakfast?

Are you sick of oatmeal or cereal, or even had too many eggs in a row?

Well listen. I’m here to tell you we’ve got a fantastic recipe for you.

I’m Dr. Jack Wolfson of The Drs. Wolfson and I want to show you our organic, Superfood delicious breakfast salad.

And what we have here, I’ve taken the liberty of cutting up some fruit already. We’ve got some nectarines and banana in here, but you can use any fruit that you want.

Apples are fantastic choices. Other stone fruits are wonderful. Even mango is a fantastic choice that we put in their as well.

So, try and find organic fruit that is in season. Local by you would of course be the best.

And then we’re going to add in there some other ingredients.

We’re going to put in some hemp seeds. It could be chia seed, it could be flax seed, a combination thereof. You really can just put it in there and use the amounts you want to use that work for you. And experiment with it. There is no definite recipe about one ratio to another.

It’s really super simple. That’s what we’re trying to do. Make it simple and healthy for you.

So, hemp seed is a fantastic source of protein and good Omega 3 fat as alpha linolenic acid, which the body has to convert to EPA/DHA.

And we also have some walnut oil we’re going to put in there.

And we’ve got some shredded coconut today. And finally, our Superfood blend, which is organic chlorella spirulina. That is a fantastic way to get this nutrition into your body and to that of your children too. So, secret recipe there.

And what we’re going to do now is put in some of the hemp seed. And we’re going to put in some of the coconut flakes. And we’re going to put in some of the Superfood. Yes!

Superfood is loaded with all different types of vitamins, minerals. Spirulina is in there for those of you that are into cholesterol reduction. Cholesterol is reduced by 47 points on spirulina. So, your body is not deficient on statin drugs. Your body is deficient in nutrients like that found in spirulina.

So, we’re mixing it all up here. And get a good shot of that. And this can store in the refrigerator for up to three days. But I don’t think it’s going to last that long because it tastes that good and you’re going to absolutely love it.

Are you suffering from palpitations, chest discomfort, shortness of breath? Are you worried about spikes in your blood pressure?

Well, I want to tell you about a certain technique that works for a lot of my patients and that is keeping a food diary.

Now, this is not keeping a food diary 24/7. I think that’s a little bit much.

But what I want you to know is that when you experience symptoms such as palpitations, or atrial fibrillation, or skip beats, or high blood pressure -whatever your symptoms are, what did you eat for the meal before that? What did you do in the previous 24 hours? Previous couple meals?

Did you have alcohol? Did you have sugar? Did you have gluten?

Is there some kind of food or lifestyle thing that happened to you where you had sudden change in your symptoms or in your blood pressure or headaches or whatever.

So, you just want to write that stuff down.

Now, you can keep a diary about all the things you do during the day. That may be the best way, but I think the easiest way is to just march back in the previous 24 hours.

What did you do? Is there something new in your life, some new experience, some new food?

How can we find the cause of your symptoms? And the diary is the best way to do so.

So, keep that diary. Write everything down. You know, use a natural provider or natural doctor to help guide you to help interpret that information but obviously you can just take a look at it and see, “oh, every time you’ve had wheat, you had palpitations.” Or every time you had dairy, or corn, or soy, or whatever it may be the trigger for you, you’ll find it by keeping a food diary.

In a perfect world, we’d meet all our nutritional needs from food.

Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world.

Due to soil depletion, modern agricultural practices, pesticides, genetically modified foods and environmental toxins, it’s virtually impossible to get adequate nutrition from food alone.

Scientific American has an excellent article on a University of Texas study explaining how vegetables and fruits are less nutritious now than they were just 50 years ago.

Another strong reason for taking dietary supplements is the Standard American Diet (SAD). The diet of the typical American has shifted from nutrient dense foods years ago to empty calorie ones today. Things like soda, chips, and candy have no nutritional value, yet are staples of most diets.

Everyone can benefit from taking supplements for health.

10 Reasons Why Supplements Are Vital to Good Health

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is low in nutrients

The SAD is full of packaged, processed or fast foods. Additionally, it consists of conventional dairy and grain products, which are low in bioavailable nutrients. The processing of dairy (homogenization and pasteurization) removes most of the essential nutrients and fat, which is why it must be fortified with synthetic ones. Grain-fed meat has consistently been found to be lower in several micronutrients and antioxidants compared to grass-fed animal products1. Foods like grains and dairy are also inflammatory and can be difficult to digest for most people.

Non-organic foods are low in nutrients and high in chemicals

Pesticides and herbicides that are used to treat conventionally raised foods are linked to cancer, heart disease and myriad of other disorders. If they can harm bugs, then they can harm humans. Chemicals can also disrupt nutrient composition in foods. On top of containing high amounts of chemicals, conventional foods also tend to be lower in nutrients. Choose organic foods all the time.

Environmental toxins are on the rise

You are exposed to toxins in everyday living. Household cleaning products. Personal care products. They are all loaded with toxins that attack our body. When you’re constantly exposed to toxins your body and liver are in detox overdrive. During detox mode the body is rapidly using nutrients to ensure these biochemical processes continue at the level that is needed. B vitamins and antioxidants are two key nutrients that can become depleted quickly. Cellular pathways are in great need of supplemental support.

Nutrient depletion of soil

Soil quality has been steadily declining since the advent of modern agricultural methods. These processes are causing rapid turnover of soil and increased growth and pest-resistance of plants. This causes a significant decrease in healthy minerals, vitamins and microbes. On top of this, the animals that eat these low nutrient plants can then become undernourished.

Increasing rates of digestive issues

Proper levels of stomach acid and digestive enzymes are needed to ensure maximal nutrient absorption. Digestive issues (such as those from food allergies, SIBO or medications) can result in decreased stomach acid and enzymes, leading to impaired nutrient absorption and utilization.

Nutrient requirements increase with age, life status and exercise

Pregnant women and older individuals are at a higher risk for nutrient deficiencies. Pregnant women have a higher nutrient need than energy need. Elderly individuals have a decreased ability to digest, absorb and utilize nutrients. Other groups of individuals such as those who have specific medical conditions could be at risk for poor nutrient absorption.

Additionally, when you exercise often then your body uses up the stored fuel reserves it has. To create energy in the body, it will also use up some of your nutrients like B vitamins. B vitamins function as coenzymes, which are the helper molecules that help your body create and use energy.

Stress also greatly depletes nutrients

Stress negatively affects all the body’s systems, especially the digestive system. When you’re stressed, you’re in flight or fight mode and your digestion comes to a standstill. Stress can be emotional/mental, physiological (i.e. disease) or environmental (i.e. chemicals). Chronic stress can also rapidly deplete B vitamins and cause low energy levels. One study looked at participants who consumed a mineral drink in a relaxed state versus a psychologically challenging state2. The researchers found that those in the relaxed state absorbed 100% of their minerals, while those in the challenging state absorbed significantly less2.

Alcohol depletes nutrients

Alcohol is a toxin and so the body will give it precedence over other nutrients to ensure that it will be digested and passed through the GI tract first. Alcohol also has a diuretic effect that can cause essential nutrients to be excreted overtime. For example, B vitamins can become depleted with heavy alcohol consumption. Alcohol can deplete digestive enzymes needed for nutrition, as well.

Certain medications can interfere with proper utilization of nutrients

A drug/ nutrient interaction is when a medication can interfere with nutrient uptake and absorption. Certain drugs can result in decreased absorption of nutrients. They can also make a nutrient less available to the body to use, which could cause a nutrient deficiency.

Supplements support your health

There is scientific evidence that supplements can promote overall health and aid in managing specific health conditions. For example, omega 3 fatty acids can help with heart disease and probiotics improve gut health. Supplements are assistants to make sure that you are getting an adequate amount of essential micronutrients in the right forms that your body can use.

6 Common Supplements Most of Us Need

A good multi-vitamin

Find a science-based multi-vitamin to get all your essential micronutrients in the correct ratio. These ensure that the body can properly use and absorb the activated vitamins, minerals and bioflavonoids it needs. You want a multi-vitamin that provides vitamins A, C, D, E, K and activated B vitamins along with key minerals like magnesium, iodine, zinc, manganese and potassium. Look for chelated minerals to maximize absorption. Make sure B vitamins are activated (methylated) to ensure high absorption. Lastly, look for a multi-vitamin in easy to digest capsules to help your body utilize all the nutrients possible. A non-synthetic multi-vitamin with no toxic fillers is the way to go!

A probiotic

A high-quality probiotic is essential to a healthy digestive system. We have trillions of bacteria that reside in our body. Advancing age, leaky gut and certain medications can all wreak havoc on our intestinal bacteria. Replenishing the gut with healthy bacteria is imperative to overall health. It can result in improved digestion, gut health and immune function.

Digestive enzymes

You aren’t necessarily what you eat. Rather, you are what you digest. Digestive enzymes are needed to aid the body in digesting and absorbing nutrients. In today’s day and age, people are not eating enough spicy and acidic foods to aid in digestion. These types of foods are stimulants that stimulate the body’s flow of saliva and gastric juices. They are also eating the SAD, which impairs absorption of nutrients and decreases enzyme function. Digestive enzymes have become crucial to ensuring that the body properly breaks down food and utilizes the nutrients within it.

Omega-3 fatty acids

These essential fatty acids are just that, essential. Our bodies cannot synthesize these therefore we must get them in the diet. They are needed for lipid formation in the brain, overall cognition and brain health. They have also been shown to be beneficial for eye health and mood. Omega-3 fatty acids can also dilate blood vessels, increase blood flow, decrease blood pressure, and normalize heart rhythms.

A Daily Greens drink

If you can’t eat all your essential nutrients, drink them. This drink is full of micronutrients, antioxidants, fiber and probiotics all wrapped into one. You would have to eat a large number of fruits and veggies every day to get the same amount of nutrition as from this drink. A supplement like this that delivers these nutrients in a highly bioavailable form helps to boost the immune system and promote overall health. Note that not all green drinks are created equal.

Vitamin D

We have said it before and we’ll keep saying it again (and again)—get into the sunshine. The sun is your best source of vitamin D, which is essential to good health. Vitamin D boosts immunity, protects against chronic diseases like cancer and can benefit the heart. If you can’t get into the sun regularly, take our vitamin D supplement by The Drs. Wolfson.

Things to Look for When Selecting a Supplement

Know that not all supplements are the same; some are better than others.

Seek out high quality supplements sourced from high quality companies.

Ensure the supplements are organic, gluten-free and non-GMO. Look for no artificial ingredients, flavors or fillers.

Make sure the supplements have the right ratio of nutrients to meet daily needs—check out the supplement facts panel.

Pay attention to the nutrient dosage, the form of the nutrient (is it absorbable?) and the time of day to take the supplement to ensure ideal absorption.

Get Your Blood Tested

What vitamins and minerals are you lacking?

The only accurate way to determine nutritional deficiencies is through comprehensive advanced blood testing.

We offer advanced intracellular and extracellular testing that tells if nutrients are actually getting into the cell. You can have plenty of vitamin C in your blood but if it’s not getting inside the cell, it’s not helping you.

You want that level of blood testing – at the cellular level.

Get details on the best testing available to get an idea of your unique nutrient requirements.

Work with your Doctor of Chiropractic or holistic physician to determine the right supplement protocol for you. And make sure to take your supplements!
